Introducing Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT) at Kouba Dermatology, Wauseon

At Kouba Dermatology, we are excited to announce a new, cutting-edge treatment option for skin cancer available at our Wauseon, OH office: Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT). This innovative approach offers a non-invasive alternative to traditional skin cancer treatments, such as Micrographically Oriented Histographic Surgery (MOHs), and is designed to provide patients with a painless and convenient experience.

What is Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT)?

SRT is a low-energy radiation treatment specifically designed to target skin cancer cells without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue. Unlike MOHs, which requires surgical excision of the cancerous tissue, SRT involves no cutting, stitching, or wound care. The procedure is quick—each session lasting approximately 10 minutes—and requires a total of 15 treatments for optimal results.

Key Benefits of SRT

- Painless Treatment: SRT is a completely pain-free procedure, making it an attractive option for patients who want to avoid the discomfort of surgery.

- No Incisions or Scarring: Since there is no cutting involved, there is no need for stitches, and patients won’t have to deal with scars or healing wounds.

- Low Risk of Infection or Complications: Without the need for surgical incisions, the risk of post-procedural infections and complications is greatly reduced.

- Convenient and Quick Visits: Each session is only about 10 minutes long, allowing patients to fit the treatment into their busy schedules with ease.

SRT vs. MOHs: Which is Right for You?

While MOHs is still considered a gold standard for certain types of skin cancers, SRT provides an excellent alternative, especially for patients who may not be ideal candidates for surgery or who prefer a non-invasive option. MOHs surgery requires the precise removal of cancerous tissue layer by layer under microscopic guidance, which is ideal for areas where tissue preservation is critical. However, for patients who are seeking a less invasive approach or have concerns about surgical risks, SRT can be a highly effective and safe option.
